Drobo 2nd Generation Storage Array Review & Giveaway (a $399 Value) [CLOSED]

by

A short while back a friend of mine told me that she needed a new computer soon. Then the next day she emailed and asked if I knew of any good deals on computers because her computer officially died. The next question just scared me – “How do I get all my information off my computer since it won’t start up?” There but for the grace ….. Easily this could be any of us on any given day.

This is a photo of one of my hard drives. Notice how little space is available? Pretty much that drive is full. And what is it full of? Primarily, it’s my over 20,000 photos – which I’d be devastated if I lost them (well, most of them anyway). Not to mention that my blog back-ups are on there, and while we’re at it all my draft and work-related agreements. And so much more. I’m sure it’s very similar for you too.

What would we do if we couldn’t get to our stored information? We rely on our computers, phones, tablet devices and so many other electronics that store information that we’re all but lost when we can’t access them. At some point in time we’ve all likely had that heart stopping moment as our computer was nearing the end of it’s life and we’d hear funny sounds or have weird pop-ups telling us there isn’t enough room to save.

In my house we have several Terabytes of data spread across a multitude of devices. And within the past 2 years I’ve dealt with 3 external hard drive failures. With no waring. Just kaput! So when I was in the market for a replacement external storage box I wanted something that was a bit more robust and had some fail-safe mechanisms built in. Really, what I wanted was something that would tell me it was about to die so I could rescue everything. But did that exist?

Enter Drobo! A friend of mine mentioned it on her site and it seemed like something I’d want. Except that she has a huge graphic design and web content manager company. How could I possibly afford something that is so high end? Do I have a place for something that’s surely a giant rack of hard drives?

Then I visited the Drobo Store and saw that not only could I afford business-level storage solutions but I’d be crazy NOT to when a small box of all my storage solutions dreams would easily fit on my desk in the same space as the multiple dead hard drives littering my office. But I was still concerned so I called Drobo and they not only explained it so well but they offered to let me and 2 of my blogging friends give the 2nd Generation Drobo Storage Array a test drive! WOW. The idea of actually having a safe place to store my over 20,000 photos was truly exciting!

About a week later my Drobo 2nd Generation Storage Array arrives. Not just thrown in any box, but so well packed it came with its own protective cover and special packing to prevent it from rattling. It was unpacked in a hot second! I spent more time looking for the manual, thinking there’s got to be more than just ‘plug and play’. But it’s not! Seriously, plug it in, pop in the drives and you’re off to back up your entire digital life. If it didn’t have lights on the front I’d have no idea it was working because it’s so quiet. So quiet, it’s more like silent.

CycleGuy set it up so the new Drobo 2nd Generation is networked and we can back up everything wirelessly. He might not admit it but I think he was excited too. I think it was the fact that we have 6T of storage and the likelihood of me calling him at work in tears because another hard drive died is now slim.

I’m pretty anal about backups and performed a backup about a week ago, but it is so monotonous to keep a desktop and two laptops fully backed up. Having the Drobo would be like a dream. Fingers crossed.

I lost my hard drive to a virus many years ago and I still have nightmares. I had so much on there, I still can’t remember what I lost (is that crazy?) I bought a Mac after that and a Time Capsule, which is now used in the house but not in my new office. This would be perfect and keep me from freaking out all the time about a possible dead computer.

Yeah, I’ve actually never backed up this computer. I do back up every single photo to a photo CD (which is time consuming), because not once, but TWICE I’ve had a computer blow on me and I lost every single photo on it.
