Know Your Digital Rights

Copyright Rock by Brian Fitzgerald

About a month ago I did a guest post at Marketplace Mommies about blog copying. It got a bit of traffic and people started talking. Yesterday, I read an article on the BlogHer website about 3 bloggers who have been dealing with content theft and the emotional turmoil it causes. Rachel from A Southern Fairytale was so gracious and not only commented on my original post but we had a nice conversation via email. She was one of the bloggers profiled in the BlogHer article and, unfortunately, has been dealing with copycats for awhile. It’s easy to understand why people would copy her beautiful images, well written posts and delicious recipes. They’re fantastic! But the reality is that she owns them and this is not only something she does for fun, but it’s her job. She’s a media maven! Kinda like a southern Martha Stewart.

And while people rip off Martha all the time, she’s got a bevvy of hungry lawyers at her beck and call. Rachel? Her kids are adorable and her husband could probably use his dad voice but bulldogs they aren’t. But that doesn’t mean she can’t protect her intellectual property.

I had already started a post for Marketplace Mommies when I read the BlogHer post about plagiarism. It’s a bit long, but I think you’ll find it helpful regardless of where you are in your blogging.

I’m guest posting at Marketplace Mommies today and my post is Know Your Digital Rights … Blog Copying and a Song.  You’ll be glad you read it! And I apologize ahead of time if you’re singing Village People songs all day.

Sara…I don’t know why you don’t think you’re funny. The song is very funny …even though it’s on a very serious subject. I’m so happy to see you writing articles posted where lots of people read them. You are a gifted writer.

Thank you so much for the kind words {blush}, you definitely have a way with words! I am so glad that you’re writing these articles and helping people to understand, as well as raising awareness!

Hi Sara,

I agree with Kim. You are a gifted writer and I love your sense of humor. I am so blessed that you are sharing your gifts and talents on Marketplace Mommies. I have been hearing about many different instances of copying and plagiarism recently and I think it is important to help educate as many people as possible like you have done through your posts.

Thank you again.

Great article on Marketplace Mommies. I bookmarked it, and while I hope I never have to refer to it, I’m glad to know what to do if I do. G’mar Chatima Tova, Sara!
