Living La Vida Local – Cupcakes in Scottsdale

Scottsdale Cupcake Shop

Several years ago I happened upon a gem of a cupcake shop. In an unassuming storefront, Cupcakes came to my rescue. Run by sisters, in a matter of 30 seconds they changed what would have been a birthday disaster into a secret find I’ve shared with anyone who asks where’s the best place to get cupcakes in Scottsdale (or, really, anywhere in the Phoenix area).

Sure, there is the big chain cupcake shop. But, personally, supporting a local shop is what I prefer. Also, when you step up and to make sure a 5 year old has birthday cupcakes I will forever be in your debt. And when your cupcakes are super awesome and are raved about for weeks after the party I’ll sing your praises.

Being the planner, I called ahead to a local bakery I’d been shopping at for 10+ years. Two weeks prior to her birthday, I ordered BabyGirl’s birthday petit-fours. I then then paid for them when I stopped in for bread. Mark that off the long list of birthday celebration “to do’s”! With BabyGirl’s birthday in mid-December there’s a lot going on. Not just with me, but everyone. Being organized that time of year is really important, or you risk ending up taking what you get.

On the designated day I show up to the bakery about 2pm, having arranged to pick up the order “after noon”. I’d been buying from this local bakery for years and never had a problem. That was until what was probably the most important day of the year – BabyGirl’s 5th birthday celebration. Turning 5 is a pretty big deal. Turning 5 without cake could possibly scar you for life and require years of therapy (in addition the therapy kid’s today will already require from the multiple means of social media embarrassment parents can employ). Who shows up at 2pm to pick up pre-paid petit-fours only to be told that you didn’t show up at noon so they sold your cakes? That would be me! Seriously! My daughter’s birthday cakes were sold out from under me, despite my having pre-paid, because I didn’t get there at noon. Even 5 years later it still riles me up. Because it’s one of the dumbest things I’ve heard.

I wasn’t about to buy mass-market store cupcakes. Besides not liking them, they didn’t fit the theme I was going for and if I had wanted regular store-bought cupcakes I’d have ordered them to begin with. So I call CycleGuy and totally freak out on the phone. This was before life with an iPhone so I was still sportin’ a Motorola Razr. I was sans internet. Luckily, CycleGuy was able to get online and search the area for alternatives. He found Cupcakes and called them – at 3pm!

Cupcakes in ScottsdaleWith just 2 hours until closing, Stephanie assured him she had 3 dozen cupcakes and would pack them up and have them waiting for me. And that she did! I walked in and must have looked like a crazy panicked woman because she immediately called me by name, welcomed me to the shop, and said she had my cupcakes ready. I’d never been here and have never tried their cupcakes so this was a total leap of faith. I figured I’ll be paying for therapy for something so if these cupcakes are horrible I’ll just add a session or two. There will be plenty of cupcake therapy, but none that requires the services of a mental-health professional.

In the years since, Cupcakes has been my go-to sweet shop for little treats and celebrations. I’ve watched as Stephanie and Lindsay have competed on Cupcake Wars, been featured in numerous magazine, and become a popular stop for celebrities. But despite all this, every time I walk in Stephanie greets me by name, asks about BabyGirl if she’s not with me, and chats like we’re old friends.
