The Beauty Of An Empty Refrigerator

Empty Refrigerator

I’m back in Arizona after having spent three weeks in California. Upon realizing we’d have to eat, I opened the refrigerator to be greeted by this. I knew I had cleaned out things that could spoil. What I failed to remember is that I reeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyy cleaned it out. No, I didn’t throw everything away. Those things that could be frozen and then defrosted upon our return went into the freezer. Things that truly would spoil and greet me with noxious fumes and remind me of a science experiment gone awry were indeed tossed.

But it got me thinking about what others do when they travel. Am I that odd to be the only one to clean out the refrigerator before going out of town? And yes, since you’re wondering, I do all the laundry before I leave so there is nothing waiting for me when I come home. It’s one of those things I learned from my grandma. She would tell me to make sure the house is as clean as possible and the clothes are all washed so when you come back you don’t have a to-do list waiting for you in addition to going through the mail, unpacking and putting away all your travel things.

And incase you’d like to know, yes, I did plan for having to restock the fridge and included it in my budget. Really the only thing I need is fruits and vegetables and eggs. Milk is in the freezer, as is cheese and deli meat. And the pantry is full, so there is no risk of starving.

So, yes, here is further proof of my Type-A over-achiever-ness. Or as my brother would say, it’s proof that I was dropped on my head when I was a baby. Whatever it is, it makes me feel less anxious returning home after a trip because nothing stinky or fuzzy will be living in my fridge.

Am I the only one? Do any of you do this too when you travel? Do you have any great tips on making sure you come home and stay relaxed?

Welcome Home Sara!

I do same thing. But need to start a bit earlier. I like to turn down water heater and check water valves. I’m looking into perhaps turning water off to W/D but it’s tricky due to home design. I have a long list, but I don’t always get 100%. I’m prepping for next week so we’ll see how I do this time! Have a great week.

i vacuum, do laundry, put fresh sheets on the bed, and clean out things like leftovers, produce, and dairy but my fridge usually isn’t that bare when i get back.

Always try to do all that stuff, just depends on how crazy the packing situation is, work or whether there’s a Lifetime Movie on that we really want to watch instead. You are an inspiration to our den of slack!
