The Best Pencil Sharpener Ever And Why You Should Buy One

The following is a review of what I declare to be the best pencil sharpener ever! I received one free to try, and have been using it for a few months. I like it so much, I’ve actually purchased some as gifts for my teacher and homeschool friends. Read on to find out why you should buy one too.

There’s something exciting about a sharp pencil. As a (former, is there really such a thing) homeschooler, you’re likely to find dozens of pencils around my house. There are all kinds – short ones from when BabyGirl was just learning how to write, sparkly ones, silver ones that have their own name – Silvie, pencils with spent erasers, colored pencils, standard yellow #2s, broken pencils, pencils no one wants to use because no matter how many times you sharpen them they just keep breaking.

Pencil Sharpener

And because I’ve openly admitted to my love of office supplies, when I came across what I will now declare as THE BEST PENCIL SHARPENER EVER there was no stopping me from saying yes to using it and sharing my thoughts. Despite my love of super-fandango techy things, I’m a purist when it comes to pencil sharpeners. I’ve gone through so many electric and battery-operated pencil sharpeners it’s not funny. And I can’t count how many of those cheap-0 hand-held ones I’ve thrown away because they are worthless.

In May, Troy (the owner and an elementary school teacher) sent me one of his pencil sharpeners. I chose blue, but they come in 4 different colors. At first glance you know this isn’t your average manual pencil sharpener. The front face pulls out and there are two little “rabbit ears” on the top of the face plate. These little “rabbit ears” hold the pencil in place and are part of the key to getting a sharp point every time.

I don’t know about you, but I hate sharpening a pencil only to end up with a nub of a pencil because it never gets sharp. Between that and the lead breaking just as I finish sharpening the pencil, it’s enough to drive me crazy. Add to that a child who likes sharp pencils and you go through a lot of pencils. I won’t even mention the tears from the pencil sharpener not sharpening or the wasted time spent sharpening pencils instead of doing schoolwork.

Sure, with back to school deals you can get those little plastic hand-held pencil sharpeners for a buck. Or you might even mind an electric or battery-operated sharpener for under $10. So why would I try to convince you to spend about $25 for a pencil sharpener? Here’s why:

1. This will be the last pencil sharpener you’ll buy (unless you’re like me and want to give them as gifts or buy them in other colors).

2. If you or your kids like sharp pencils every. single. time. this is the only sharpener you’ll ever need.

3. They’re easy to use (after a little bit of learning) and don’t require a lot of strength so they’re good for little kids or kids with strength issues.

4. This thing sharpens the cheapest (both in price and quality) pencils like a pro. No more starting with a new pencil only to end up with a nub and still not get it to a usable point.

5. A quiet pencil sharpener makes for a happy classroom (whether it’s at a school or home).

6. You’ll have this for a long time so it’s a great value!

Having spent time in my daughter’s class room for the past two years, I can tell you that one of the biggest distraction is pencil sharpening. Her teacher had a fancy electric sharpener, in hopes of limiting pencil-sharpening related drama but that didn’t work. The thing was loud and often didn’t work. Then it broke. So back to the even louder “industrial” sharpener that ate pencils like Cookie Monster eats cookies. And the noise. I wasn’t in the classroom as much as the teacher, but I have no clue how she could tune out that churning noise.

Sharpener with Pencil

If you need a pencil sharpener for your home, buy the best pencil sharpener. If you’re trying to think of a gift for a teacher, they will thank you for buying them one of these. Seriously, teachers get all kinds of random junk they really don’t need. But this? You may bring the teacher to tears – tears of joy! If you are a teacher, get a few of your fellow teachers to buy one and the price goes way down. Or tell the school that these are the best classroom pencil sharpeners and get one for every classroom!

You don’t have to admit to being an office supply or school supply junkie like me, but don’t you love a nice sharp pencil?

    1. Kate, she will love this sharpener! Seems crazy to be so giddy with excitement about a pencil sharpener but the teachers I’ve given them to are thrilled. Hope she likes it!

  1. I bought this sharpener because my old one made a horrible squealing noise. I’m a librarian but we have study hall in this library, so I had to find a good sharpener.
This one is not super quiet, but it works SO fast that it doesn’t create a big disturbance.
I even had one junior-high student (stinker!) try to put in a pencil the wrong way, and it still works!
I would recommend this sharpener to anyone who uses standard pencils. (It does not adjust for wider, early childhood-type pencils.)
