All the beef sold at Whole Foods, the animals are raised without antibiotics or added hormones, on ranches that have been certified to Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step™ Animal Welfare Rating program. On Wednesday, October 10, 2012 Whole Foods Market will offer its 100% Grass Fed Ground Beef (85% Lean) for only $3.99 lb.

Grass-fed beef is a leaner choice than grain-fed beef and it has a more favorable ratio of omega fatty acids. Grass-fed beef runs the risk of drying out or becoming overcooked more quickly than grain-finished beef. Here are some recommended cooking tips from the butchers at Whole Foods:

  • Grass-Fed beef is best when removed from the refrigerator 15 minutes or so prior to cooking. Cooking it cold may result in it being overcooked.
  • When cooking on the grill you’ll want to avoid cooking directly over the flames.
  • When cooking in the oven, lower the oven’s cooking temperature by about 25°F compared to other types of meat.
